Our approach to independent Board evaluation is to turn necessity into a virtue.
Best practice governance encourage regular Board performance evaluation. Yet whilst we always address the areas that governance codes expect, our reviews are more holistic.
Our Board evaluations focus on overall Board effectiveness rather than simply issues of compliance. Hence our approach is not 'to check up' on the Board. Rather, we more seek to identify positive ways in which it can support the organisation to deliver its aspirations.
The methodology that we adopt for Board evaluation is thorough and involves extensive interviewing of Board members and selected stakeholders, reviews of Board papers and minutes and attendance at Board and Committee meetings. We do not adopt the simplistic 'tick-box' methodology that some consider adequate for effective Board evaluation.
Whether we are working with private, public or third sector Boards, or with professional institutions, the result of our Board evaluations is a well-evidenced set of conclusions. These are accompanied by succinct actionable outcomes for the Board to implement.
