Governance review

It is sometimes the case that the governance structures that an organisation has in place are themselves a barrier to success.

For example, this may be the case within professional institutions that have developed over a long period of time. Or in the third sector where dependence on voluntary support may not have brought the benefits of the governance disciplines of the private or public sectors.

Problems that can arise include Boards that are over-large, multi-layered or which have too many sub-committees. This can give rise to a unnecessary bureaucracy, inefficient use of time and a lack of clarity and focus. Issues can also arise where there is an inadequate mix of skills and experience within the Board as a result of ad hoc appointments.

The overall result is often intense frustration amongst Board members and those that they are appointed to serve plus a sense of regularly 'walking through treacle'.

Our Governance Reviews are designed to examine these structures and their impacts. We recommend modified governance arrangements and sensitive implementation planning.
